予始读翱《复性书》三篇，曰：此《中庸》之义疏尔。智者诚其性，当读《中庸》；愚者虽读此不晓也，不作可焉。又读《与韩侍郎荐贤书》，以谓翱特穷时愤世无荐己者，故丁宁如此；使其得志，亦未必。以韩为秦汉间好侠行义之一豪俊，亦善论人者也。最后读《幽怀赋》，然后置书而叹，叹已复读，不自休。恨，翱不生于今，不得与之交；又恨予不得生翱时，与翱上下其论也删。
译文： 我开始读李翱的三篇《复性书》时，心里想：这不过是给《中庸》作的注释。聪明人理解“性”的含义，不读《复性书》也知道应当使“性”恢复到中庸，愚笨的人即使读了《复性书》，也不懂得这个道理，所以《复性书》不作也可以。又读他的《与韩侍郎荐贤书》，认为李翱只是时运不通而愤恨社会上没有推荐自己的人，因此反复述说求贤之事；假如他能得志。也未必这样。然而他把韩愈比做秦汉间好侠行义的一位豪杰之士，也算是善论人了。我最后读了下《幽怀赋》，然后放下书卷赞叹，赞叹后又读，不能停下来。遗憾的是李翱不生于今世，不能与他交往。又可惜自己没有出生在中唐，不能与他共同反复商讨他所提出的问题。
注释： 李翱：唐代文学家，韩愈的学生。自幼“勤于儒学，博雅好古”，但性格耿直，权贵虽“重其学”，而“恶其激讦”，因此“仕不得显官”。文章提及的《复性书》《与韩侍郎荐贤书》《幽怀赋》皆为其作品。韩侍郎，指韩愈。义疏：古书的注解。诚：一作“识”。上下其论：讨论古今政事的得失。
凡昔翱一时人，有道而能文者，莫若韩愈。愈尝有赋矣，不过羡二鸟之光荣，叹一饱之无时尔。此其心使光荣而饱，则不复云矣。若翱独不然，其赋曰：“众嚣嚣而杂处兮，成叹老而嗟卑；视予心之不然兮，虑行道之犹非。”又怪神尧以一旅取天下，后世子孙不能以天下取河北，以为忧必。呜呼！使当时君子皆易其叹老嗟卑之心为翱所忧之心，则唐之天下岂有乱与亡哉？
译文： 以往与李翱同一时代的所有人，行仁义之道而善于作的没有谁赶得上韩愈。韩愈曾经写过一篇赋，不过是羡慕两只鸟的荣耀，感叹还没吃上一顿饱饭罢了。推究韩愈的心理，假如让他光显荣耀、生活宽裕，那他就不再感叹了。像李翱就不是这样。他的《幽怀赋》说：“众人喧哗而纷纷退隐，都感叹年老和地位卑下；内省自己的心却不是这样，只担心行圣人之道还有不足之处。”又诧异李世民能用一支军队取得天下，而后代的子孙却不能用全天下的力量收复河北，为此而忧虑。啊！假使当时的人们都改变他们的叹老嗟卑之心而代之以李翱的忧国之心，那么，唐的天下哪能发生动乱和最终灭亡呢？
注释： 一时人：同时代的人。愈尝有赋矣：指韩愈所作《感二鸟赋》。“不过羡二鸟”二句：借有人向皇帝献二鸟事，以抒发自己不得志的不平之感。其赋：指李翱的《幽怀赋》“视予心”二句：唐代自德宗、顺宗以后，政治形势江河日下，战乱不息，朝廷已失去对全国的控制，人民生活困苦。神尧：指唐太宗。一旅：一支军队，古代五百人为一旅。这里指唐王朝发祥地的太原部队。“后世子孙”句：唐代自安史之乱后，河北、河南诸重镇相继被藩镇割据，战乱不息，唐王朝始终不能收复。
然翱幸不生今时，见今之事，则其忧又甚矣。奈何今之人不忧也？余行天下，见人多矣，脱有一人能如翱忧者，又皆贱远，与翱无异；其余光荣而饱者，一闻忧世之言，不以为狂人，则以为病痴子，不怒则笑之矣。呜呼，在位而不肯自忧，又禁他人使皆不得忧，可叹也夫！
译文： 然而李翱幸好没有出生在当今之世，看到当前发生的事情，那么他的忧虑更严重了。怎么当前的人不知忧虑呢！我在世上，见的人很多了．倘若有一个像李翱那样忧虑国事的，又都是职位低和被朝廷贬斥的人，与李翱相同；其他得意做官的人，一昕到有谁讲忧世的话，不是把他看做狂人，就是把他看做傻子，不是发脾气，就是笑话他。啊！身在其位而自己无忧国之心，又禁止别人，让人都不忧国，真是可叹呀！
注释： 见今之事：指宋王朝西北地区不断受辽和西夏侵犯的现实。脱有：即使有。

欧阳修（1007－1072），字永叔，号醉翁，晚号“六一居士”。汉族，吉州永丰（今江西省永丰县）人，因吉州原属庐陵郡，以“庐陵欧阳修”自居。谥号文忠，世称欧阳文忠公。北宋政治家、文学家、史学家，与韩愈、柳宗元、王安石、苏洵、苏轼、苏辙、曾巩合称“唐宋八大家”。后人又将其与韩愈、柳宗元和苏轼合称“千古文章四大家”。
